More and more customers are moving to disk-based backup strategies for reasons including faster backup & restore, reduced human error from tape handling, lack of media errors and high reliability. Overland's REO disk-based backup appliance is a powerful SATA-based backup appliance designed for smooth integration into existing backup environments.
How does it work?
Simply put, a backup server writes data to the REO instead of straight to tape, and gains the full speed benefits of writing data to disk using the block level iSCSI protocol. REO’s onboard ProtectionOS software includes virtual tape emulation, so the device can present as tape instead of disk. Tape is the most natural and hassle free interface for backup software to write to. This feature eliminates the need to purchase additional backup software agents to handle writing data to general purpose disk. In addition, REO’s unique dynamic virtual tape will automatically expand and contract virtual tapes as needed without the need for user input for maximum efficiency of hard disk space.
Data on the REO can be restored in a fraction of a second before eventual migration to physical tape through a simple tape copy command. The following diagram illustrates this process:

REOs can even replicate data between sites over a WAN using simple addon MultiSitePAC software, saving your customers from physically shipping tape media between sites. There are many well known cases of large companies losing valuable data en route stored on tapes….
